THE PLAN
Every Monday I will post the reading for the week ahead. It will be about 10 chapters a week. You might want to read a chapter or two a day, and catch up at weekends. If there is a verse that especially spoke to you, a question that you have, or a thought that struck you, please share it with your fellow travellers by making a comment.

Whatever you do, don’t go back to Egypt!
When Nebuchadnezzar marches into Jerusalem he spares Jeremiah (39:11-14). The commander even gives him free choice over where to live (40:4-5). Paradoxically, this is really awkward for Jeremiah. To any of his people who suspected him of being a foreign agent (sowing despair and resignation among the people, advising surrender to the King of Babylon) his treatment at the hand of the victorious Babylonians will only have confirmed their suspicions! But all along, Jeremiah has done nothing but speak the words of the Lord, often at great personal cost. I have been struck by how many of these chapters are about the people’s refusal to take Jeremiah’s words at face value. They make him out to be a liar, and prefer the words of other so-called prophets.
