THE PLAN

Every Monday I will post the reading for the week ahead. It will be about 10 chapters a week. You might want to read a chapter or two a day, and catch up at weekends. If there is a verse that especially spoke to you, a question that you have, or a thought that struck you, please share it with your fellow travellers by making a comment.

Remembering 10:14-15 (‘To the LORD your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. Yet the LORD set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations.’) helped me grasp the proportionality of chapter 13, which otherwise reads very severely (especially 13:6-11). I find that sort of death sentence hard to hear, but leading people away from the worship of the living God (who out of all creation has chosen them for his love) is utterly abhorrent.

I agree. It is jarring and shocking. But a helpful macrocosm of our own lives, perhaps. The command that precedes this: 'You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.' The human heart is so easily swayed. We are fickle. So in our own lives, we can take no risks, we need to purge the things that lead us astray. This book is great at getting to the root of our problem: we need God, but we so quickly turn away from him.
