THE PLAN

Every Monday I will post the reading for the week ahead. It will be about 10 chapters a week. You might want to read a chapter or two a day, and catch up at weekends. If there is a verse that especially spoke to you, a question that you have, or a thought that struck you, please share it with your fellow travellers by making a comment.

The punishments in these chapters are clearly designed to be deterrents, for example, 19:19-21 ‘You must purge the evil from among you… the rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.’ or 21:21 ‘Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.’ It left me wondering, what are the deterrents under the new covenant? What deters us from sin?
