THE PLAN
Every Monday I will post the reading for the week ahead. It will be about 10 chapters a week. You might want to read a chapter or two a day, and catch up at weekends. If there is a verse that especially spoke to you, a question that you have, or a thought that struck you, please share it with your fellow travellers by making a comment.

Watching the slow train wreck of Saul’s reign in 11-20 has been painful reading. It descends into bitterness and hatred of David, but begins with a serious error when he (instead of Samuel?) offers sacrifices in 13:8-12. Judgment is immediate and final in 13:13-14. His mistakes continue with the partial obedience of 15:9. Despite his remorse in 15:24-25, there are no second chances. The root of all this seems to be a casual disregard for the word of the Lord. To be the Lord’s anointed and disobey him is unpardonable. As Samuel says in 15:22 “To obey is better than sacrifice… Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.” As one who is often guilty of that same casual disregard, all of this makes me wonder at (and grateful for) Jesus’ perfect obedience. He never rejected the word of the LORD, never disobeyed, and so became the King that Saul, David, Solomon and all who came after them would never be.
