THE PLAN

Every Monday I will post the reading for the week ahead. It will be about 10 chapters a week. You might want to read a chapter or two a day, and catch up at weekends. If there is a verse that especially spoke to you, a question that you have, or a thought that struck you, please share it with your fellow travellers by making a comment.

1 Samuel 21-31

I was amazed by how David repeatedly resists the temptation to take Saul’s life, even though Saul is bent on hunting him down, and even though the LORD delivers Saul into David’s hands several times. But David is principled, not opportunistic: he is resolute in his conviction that it would be wrong to 'raise a hand against the LORD’s anointed' (Saul). He leaves judgment in the LORD’s hands, and that runs its course in the sad events of chapter 31. Interesting also to note that the very thing for which God had rejected Saul (his refusal to destroy the Amalekites, chapter 15, cf 28:18) is the very thing that David ends up carrying out in chapter 30. And look how long judgment on the Amalekites had been suspended (15:2)! The LORD has a terrifyingly long memory!
